Oakley was originally founded by James Jannard in 1975. Jannard began by creating grips and other sports equipment for motocross events. By 1980, Jannard developed a pair of goggles that he referred to as the “O-Frame.” A few years later the company expanded into ski goggles.
While Oakley still manufacturers all kinds of sports equipment and accessories, it is most well-known for its sunglasses. The “Factory Pilot Eyeshades” were Oakley’s first sunglasses for men, released in 1984. The brand continued to gain recognition both inside and outside of the sportsworld in the following years. By 1990, Oakley’s had already become an internationally-recognized brand.
Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, James Jannard acquired various eyewear brands, adding to his ever-growing Oakley business empire. The company has gained even more international notoriety through a series of business partnerships. Oakleys was an official sponsor of both the 2012 and 2020 Olympics.
However, it is Oakley’s dedication to sports innovation that has distinguished the brand from its competitors. Nearly all Oakley men’s and women’s sunglasses have been field tested — with input from sports scientists and professional athletes. Oakley also produces US Standard Issue sunglasses, which helps meet the needs of U.S. military and law enforcement personnel. As a result, Oakley sunglasses have become synonymous with quality and high-grade efficacy.
Alternatively, the Oakley Holbrook and Frogskins offer more standard lenses, with both square and rounded options. The Frogskins collection is also notable for its flared end pieces, which offers consumers a throwback to old-school sunglasses designs. Both Holbrook and Frogskins have the option to choose regular black lenses or specialized colored lenses.
Finally, the Coldfuse and Batwolf collections offer some of the most modern designs in Oakley's catalogue. The Coldfuse and Batwolf collections include sunglasses for both athletic and casual use. The Coldfuse design is most notable for its metal lens bridge, while the Batwolf features a single lens connected across the top of the nosepiece.
