Timex Watches

Timex Group USA is an American watch manufacturer that has been around for over a century and a half. Originally called the Waterbury Clock Company, the company was founded in 1854 in Connecticut. Though the company struggled to remain solvent during World War 2, it was eventually able to rebrand itself as Timex and become one of the most popular timepiece brands in the American market. According to chronograph historians, Thomas Olsen purchased the company in 1941 and renamed it Timex — a name that came about as a combination of Time Magazine and Kleenex.

Before it became known as Timex, the Waterbury Clock Company was owned and operated by a local brass manufacturer, Benedict & Burnham. In the mid-19th century, the company was one of the largest producers of clocks in the region. The Waterbury Clock Company even exported a large portion of its stock to Europe. It was not until 1887 that the company introduced pocket watches.

During World War I, soldiers (particularly artillerymen) needed a way to keep time without taking their attention away from their work. The Waterbury Clock Company already had a lady’s watch in circulation, so they simply made some modifications to suit the needs of the modern soldier. For decades afterward, the company became closely linked with the U.S. military, providing much-needed equipment, especially in times of war.

Nonetheless, the company struggled to stay afloat during times of peace. Fortunately, once it was rebranded as Timex and began producing watches for men and women, the company was able to find much greater success. Today, Timex is one of the most well-known manufacturers of affordable automatic watches, military watches, and digital watches.

Timex Watch Collections

Timex distinguishes itself from many other watch manufacturers with the sheer breadth of its offerings. Whether you are looking for a rugged watch that will stay protected from the elements or a smartwatch to sync with your phone, Timex has something for you. If you are looking for a traditional, round-faced wristwatch, the three best Timex collections are the Classic, Marlin, Fairfield, Waterbury, and Weekender lines.

For those who want to have a wristwatch that can stand up to any challenge, Timex has a wide variety of sports watches. The Expedition, Indiglo, and MK1 watches are all great options, as they generally feature strong fabric bands, easy-to-read faces, and electroluminescent backlight technology.

While digital watches may not be as popular as they once were, many consumers still prefer the simplicity of telling the time with a digital interface. Fortunately, nearly all the Timex collections include one or two digital options. Moreover, the Ironman and Marathon lines include dozens of modern designs that allow you to quickly view the time, day, and date in a digital format.

Though digital watches may seem a little too “old school” for some, Timex also offers the latest in smartwatch technology. The Metropolitan is the premier Timex smartwatch, with a high-resolution touch display, a 12-hour rechargeable battery, as well as voice and text notifications. Alternatively, if you just want something that will help you stay in shape, the iQ+ Move collection offers the perfect balance between traditional timepieces and modern smartwatch technology.
